Catherine (Kate) Higgins MacLellan

Catherine (Kate) Higgins MacLellan
Kate can make a claim that not many graduates can – she has made a gift to UC Santa Cruz every year since 1982 – that’s over 30 years of giving to her alma mater! Kate graduated with a degree in Aesthetic Studies (aka creative writing) from Porter College in 1975. She particularly enjoyed the classes of Professor George Hitchcock, who showed students how to turn their poetry into handmade books.

After college, Kate worked in hospitality, property management, and as a travel agent. She raised a daughter with her husband and became a credentialed preschool teacher, working in Novato and Tiburon for many years.

Kate has also included a gift in her estate for UC Santa Cruz. She credits her philanthropy to her mother’s influence. As a graduate of Wellesley College, her mother supported the university throughout her life.

UC Santa Cruz isn’t the only beneficiary of Kate’s generosity. She is active in her church as well as a volunteer with Ambassadors of Hope and Opportunity that helps youth ages 18-25 who don’t have parental support. Recently, she and her husband took a young woman into their home for two months while she prepared for entry into the Job Corps.
