Kathy and Richard Beal

Kathy and Richard Beal
"We want to set a good example for our children," says Kathy Beal.

Kathy learned about the Seymour Marine Discovery Center when a brochure arrived in the mail describing the Ocean Explorers program, which uses field and lab experiences to teach young people about life in the sea. Kathy called up and asked if there was a scholarship fund. There was, so she made a gift.

Meanwhile, Richard was looking for a way to give back to his community through volunteer service. He started by asking friends about the top organizations in Santa Cruz County, and the Seymour Marine Discovery Center was mentioned over and over again. He joined the board of directors, and quickly learned why the organization is so highly regarded. "I've worked with a lot of nonprofits, and the quality of the staff and volunteers is amazing. Just first rate," said Richard, who is retired from the corporate world. He and Kathy, an artist and photographer, quickly became dedicated and involved supporters.

They also support the Seymour Marine Discovery Center through a planned gift. "A planned gift helps us give more significantly than we could do on a yearly basis," said Richard. "This is particularly important to us, because we're interested in helping the Seymour Center with their long-term success." Their support has strengthened the Seymour Center and made a difference in their own lives. "The more we learned about our oceans, the more we were struck that this is not an optional activity," said Richard. "It's crucial for our society."
